In New Jersey, students could go to jail for carrying a beeper to school More likely, they would get suspended, but

it is against the law to carry a pager to school in New Jersey, Michigan, Virginia, and many other states. State

governments give out this law because some educators believe that beepers are associated with drug deals and gang

activity, and that removing the devices for school would makes schools safer.

    I'm a high school student and also I am against this law. I think today beepers are mainstream, people who are not

all related to drug and gangs. Pagers don't symbolize those bad things anymore. Also, some students carry pagers

because their parents want them to. Parents want to be able to reach their children easily  in an emergency.  People

who support this law said parents can call the school office to find their children.  However, some parents don't

know how to speak English.  Also, some parents may not so sure about the children in school.  If they call to school,

it means there is an emergency because parents won't always want to distract their children from learning.  But if

they're not so sure about the children's information, it's going to take longer to reach their children.  It can't be as

convenient as by paging their children directly.  For the point the people said students who get beeped during class

will interrupt the classmates, students can actually simply set their pagers on vibrating mode.  Maybe beepers are not

an absolute necessity, just like jewelry.  It's true that they're both not a necessity, but if we should ban beepers from

school, should we ban the students who are wearing jewelry?  I don't think so.  Just like jewelry,  students can bring

its to school if they like to. Also, beeper can be a watch, they show date and time on it.

    I'm a student who has a beeper also.  I don't think that banned beeper can help for make schools safer. There're

nothing is wrong with bringing beepers to school. It doesn't make any change for students. If we could really go to

jail for carrying a beeper to school, I think the punishment might be too strong. I hope the state governments can

really think about it first.
